Having LASIK is a huge decision. And at Updegraff Vision, we understand this – that’s why Dr. Stephen Updegraff is dedicated to patient education, and ensuring you are informed and comfortable with everything you experience.
Since he began performing LASIK nearly 20 years ago, Dr. Updegraff has heard countless questions about LASIK at Updegraff Vision. Here are some of the most common ones:
1. Is LASIK painful?
LASIK is virtually painless. You will be awake during the procedure, but we will provide you with a light sedative to keep you relaxed, and numb your eyes using anesthetic eye drops. During the surgery, you will feel cool fluid and pressure, but you won’t feel pain. Dr. Updegraff will talk you through each step of your LASIK surgery, and one of our team members will hold your hand during your procedure as an extra level of comfort.
2. Will Dr. Stephen Updegraff perform my LASIK surgery?
Yes. Dr. Stephen Updegraff is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cornea specialist, and he performs every LASIK surgery in Updegraff Vision’s state-of-the-art facility. Additionally, Dr. Updegraff had LASIK himself in 1995, so he has a unique perspective when it comes to your experience and expectations.
3. Can I go blind from LASIK with Dr. Updegraff?
No one has ever gone blind from having LASIK surgery with Dr. Updegraff. Over the past 15+ years of performing LASIK, Dr. Updegraff has developed system of safety with cross checks that prevents the more common LASIK mistakes and complications seen from less experienced or less caring facilities.
4. Does LASIK by Updegraff include the latest technology?
Updegraff Vision is home to the most advanced laser technologies. Dr. Updegraff was the first surgeon in Tampa Bay to use the Intralase femtosecond laser, which enabled his procedures to be blade-free. This technology, combined with individualized Wavefront-guided treatments – which have been tested and accepted by NASA and the military – provide the safest, most advanced form of LASIK available. Additionally, Dr. Updegraff is currently the only surgeon on Florida’s west coast with the new iFS femtosecond laser, the fastest laser for all-laser LASIK.
5. What is the recovery time for LASIK?
After your LASIK surgery with Dr. Updegraff, you will be able to resume most normal activities – including driving, exercising, and computer work – the next day. Contact sports will require the use of protective eyewear, and you must wait two weeks before swimming.
