Two years ago, one of Dr. Stephen Updegraff’s patients recorded his entire experience with LASIK at Updegraff Vision in a series of blog posts. Here is Brody’s story.
What a weird feeling it is to know that you are never going to do something again that you have been doing everyday for the last 20 years. As I took my contacts out the other day I know that those days are now over. The idea of having LASIK has been on my mind since my optometrist told me about the procedure in 1995. Since then I have been justifying my enslavement to my glasses and contacts even though I knew that I wanted a change. I know that most of the time people who wear contacts or glasses just get used to them and are content with wearing them. I also have made all the excuses that you can make, “LASIK cost too much”, “I am going to wait to see if there is any long term issues with LASIK”, “I actually like my contacts/glasses”.
Well I am not making those excuses anymore. I have added up all of the costs of buying glasses and contacts and I am well over the cost of LASIK and I am only 34 years old. So if I live an average lifespan that means that I would have spent at least 3 times as much on glasses and contacts as I would on LASIK. Imagine the money I would have saved if I would have had LASIK when my doctor wanted to in 1995. So excuse number one is gone.
After my consultation with Dr. Updegraff I learned that the first LASIK type procedure called Keratomileusis took place around 1950. I going to assume that there has been some technological advances since that first surgery. Doing some research on my own, I have found that an estimated 98% of people who have had LASIK are satisfied with their experience. Tell me something that you know of that has a 98% satisfaction rate. I can’t use excuse number two anymore.
The notion of liking the act of putting a piece of soft plastic in your eye still has me confused. I really have never like putting contacts in, you just kind of get used to it. As far as liking glasses, do I really need to go there. I work outside all day in the Florida sun and wearing my glasses all day for the last week has been a miserable experience.
OK so now I have justified my decision to get LASIK, please follow this blog as I go through the LASIK procedure over the next week.
